I learned nothing new about Richard or his work with this post. Yet, it was my favorite to date.
Towards the theatre of enlightenment.
I came here to see in close how Mr. Foreman works. Staging unconscious, unless it is a model of playground and not a mere theme of a play, should bring very serious methodological conflicts. And as nothing here looks like an improvisation so we can say it is in the frame of conventional drama. Even the light design system (though digitally much more complicated) unintendedly reveals this unexpected secret to the simplest semiotic approach to the play.
Decor of the play suggests reminiscences to modernism, constructivism, early avant-garde theatre, surrealism and with these two double beamers towards two large screens ( if this can be considered as a decor at all), non-linear, archival approach to recorded sound and visual data and applied mystical discourses we are exposed to opposite, to our postmodern enlightenment and diffusion. The latter happens when tools are taken for their only value (today's gizmo-conscious postmodern theater).
Eventually we suppose there should be some symbols invoked or created anew. This aspect seems to be most fascinating and refreshing, as a narrow way to bring romantic illumination (light design is not so formal actually, its flash lamps are blinding and illuminating through and suddenly almost from everywhere but utmost gaily from the light reflecting screens themselves) into our postmodern performance.
Is totality of unconscious really a world of dead and lovers where nothing can be articulated (actors are saying not even a line, the screen speaks instead and play is being written during the very time of rehearsing based on the texts from movie) outside its sacred world?
David, your comment is outstanding.
